INTRODUCTION
The Department of Pathology runs the oldest clinical laboratory of the country and is providing the services since the establishment of Bir hospital. It was conceived as the country’s central public health laboratory before National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) was separately established in the year 1978 at Teku, Kathmandu. The department has expanded since then and now incorporates quality services in the field of Hematology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, Immunology, Parasitology, Blood bank, and Molecular Pathology. The laboratory boasts highly skilled and dedicated team of Pathologist, Microbiologist, Biochemist, Technologist, Technicians, and supportive Lab staffs providing routine and emergency laboratory services for all the patients visiting the hospitalThe laboratory receives an average 600 samples in clinical lab every day. The department is dedicated continually to deliver accurate, precise, and reliable laboratory tests on timely manner at the most affordable prices.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES:
The department conducts Postgraduate residency program for MD Pathology which was started since the very beginning of inception of National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). Around thirty-five MD Pathologists have been graduated who are currently serving within the country as well as in abroad. The MD program includes daily academic sessions, presentations, research activities and posting to different affiliated hospitals. The results of these activities have been published in well known national and international medical journals. The department actively participates in interdepartmental meetings with department of neurosurgery, urosurgery, gastro surgery, dermatology, and oncology. The laboratory also provides short term training facilities to the laboratory medicine students from other institute seeking exposure on laboratory related works.

MISSION:
To ensure patient seeking health care from the hospital receive an accurate and precise laboratory reports on timely manner by optimizing the available resources.
GOAL:
To provide quality reports to the patients with the help of trained, motivated and highly skilled lab personnel utilizing the most sophisticated of the equipment facilitating in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the diseases. To train highly competent MD (pathology) graduates.
SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE PATIENTS
The laboratory is well equipped with state of the art equipments on all the departments and are run by well trained laboratory personnel. The laboratory offers a 24-hour service focused on providing laboratory tests to benefit patient care. The department is routinely providing services in the following aspects:
